Types of US work visas in 2026 — what they are and who qualifies

The US visa landscape in 2026 still revolves around a compact set of categories — most of which Indian professionals will encounter at some point.

  • H-1B — speciality occupation, bachelor's-degree minimum, employer-sponsored. Three years, renewable to six. FY2026 cap exhausted on the first registration round; the FY2027 lottery window opens March 2026 under the revised beneficiary-centric selection rule.
  • L-1A / L-1B — intracompany transferee. L-1A for executives and managers (up to 7 years), L-1B for specialised-knowledge employees (up to 5 years). No annual cap.
  • O-1 — extraordinary ability in sciences, arts, business, education or athletics. Documented record required; no cap; renewable indefinitely.
  • F-1 + OPT / STEM-OPT12 months of post-study work, extended to 36 months for STEM graduates. Cap-gap rules cover the F-1 → H-1B transition.
  • TN, E-3, J-1, B-1 — niche but useful for Canadian, Australian, exchange-visitor and short business-trip cases.

Always confirm with USCIS or a licensed immigration attorney — policy lands mid-year, and the rules in May 2026 may not be the rules in October. For India-based roles in the meantime, browse open positions on OwnYourCareer.
