Own developer docs, API references, and the words that ship with the product.

  1. Stage 1Months 0–2

    Foundations

    Technical writing = clear writing + technical depth. Start by reading good docs + writing one teardown a week of a product you use.

    • Read + study: Google Developer Documentation Style Guide, Microsoft style
    • Write one teardown / week of an existing product's docs (publish on GitHub)
    • Markdown, MDX, Git + one static-site generator (Astro / Next / Docusaurus)

  2. Stage 2Months 2–5

    First job-ready skills

    Pick a stack to specialise in (API / SDK / DevTools / SaaS). The portfolio at this stage is 5 well-written docs with API references and code samples.

    • Write 5 sample docs: API reference, conceptual guide, tutorial, troubleshooting, changelog
    • Build a personal docs site that you would ship to engineers
    • Contribute one PR to a popular open-source project's docs (improving clarity)
    Salary range₹4L – ₹8L
  3. Stage 3Months 5–10

    Real projects

    Three open-source docs portfolios with measurable engagement (issues closed, time-on-page, support ticket reduction). Postman / Atlassian / Razorpay hire on signal.

    • Three OSS docs portfolios with measurable engagement (issues, search hits)
    • Lead one docs migration (legacy → modern; e.g. Confluence → Docusaurus)
    • Implement docs testing: link checks + code-sample tests in CI
    Salary range₹8L – ₹10L
  4. Stage 4Year 2–3

    Specialisation

    Specialise: API docs, Developer marketing, Education, or DevRel. Top product companies (Postman / GitLab / Atlassian) hire by speciality at senior level.

    • Choose: API docs, DevRel, Education / Curriculum, or Internal docs
    • Build one developer-education series (blog + video + sample repo)
    • Speak at one industry event (DevRelCon / WriteTheDocs / FOSDEM)

  5. Stage 5Year 4+

    Senior trajectory

    Own developer experience for a product. Senior TWs at Postman / Atlassian / Microsoft / GitLab clear ₹18L+ with measurable impact on developer activation.

    • Set the docs strategy + style guide for an entire product line
    • Mentor 2 junior TWs; run weekly editorial reviews on their work
    • Influence product strategy: docs feedback loop → product roadmap
    Salary range₹14L – ₹20L
